Our Story

Project Yoga MOV, INC.

Project Yoga MOV, INC. is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing the benefits of yoga to under-served and at-risk communities. We teach our constituents how to reduce stress levels, increase flexibility (in body and mind), and improve their emotional outlook through yoga, mindful breathing and meditation.

Bringing Yoga & Mindfulness to Those in Need
We teach to people who have never been exposed to yoga, giving them the chance to experience the emotional and physical well being that can result. We assemble a team of certified teachers and provide a curriculum plan for a 4-6-8 week series of classes. The team alternates lead teacher and assistant roles, so that our students benefit from hearing different voices week to week.
Over the course of a program, Project Yoga MOV teaches poses, meditation techniques and breathing exercises that address the needs of the group. The common thread in all Project Yoga programs is teaching people how to find the ease in a pose and calm one’s thoughts. We also focus on teaching breathing techniques that aid in stress relief and help to calm the nervous system.
From a physical standpoint, yoga stretches not only muscles but the soft tissues of the body. That includes ligaments, tendons, and the fascia sheath that surrounds the muscles of the body. In one recent study, participants had up to 35% improvement in flexibility after only eight weeks of yoga. Added strength, endurance, improved posture and breathing are also reported. Project Yoga’s certified instructors are trained to be mindful of varying levels of ability and how to modify poses for safety.
Project Yoga crafts curriculum to each program’s participants. We follow a lesson plan, but as the group gets in sync, we have also been known to go off script too.
Classes are light-hearted and welcoming. Project Yoga MOV teachers instruct how each pose can be modified so that everyone can participate at the level they’re comfortable. Tips for developing a yoga and meditation practice at home are shared. We emphasize that yoga is not a competitive sport–that’s why we call in a “practice!”
In a practical level, all mats and props are provided. We look for a room at each facility that has enough clear space to allow for a comfortable practice, free from people passing through or noisy distractions.
